The scene in which Joker freaks out when Valestra touches him is a reference to an unmade episode of the series called The Life of a Gun, which would have detailed the origins and life of the gun that killed Thomas and Martha Wayne. The episode revealed that the writers of the series originally planned for the show to fall in line with Batman (1989) and have a young Jack Napier be the one who killed Bruce's parents, as lashed out when Thomas Wayne tried to stop him, with young Bruce being so traumatized that he couldn't remember the killer's face, only the sight of the gun. One sequence planned for Napier to reclaim the gun by chance on the fateful night at the Monarch Card Company where his first battle with Batman would turn him into the Joker, caused by Napier lashing out when Batman grabbed him, causing him to fall into the chemical vat. The episode was scrapped before it could begin production, due to the network becoming uncomfortable with a scene in which the gun ends up in the hands of a young boy who, believing the gun to be empty, almost shoots his brother while playing cops and robbers.
