Although the basic premise is essentially the same, the film diverges dramatically from the source novel around the halfway mark and removes one of its main characters entirely. In the book, the attempted assassination at the Café Alonzo ends with Luther Whitney's arrest, and later a second attempt on his life succeeds. His quest for justice is then taken up by Jack Graham, a lawyer and ex-boyfriend of Kate Whitney, who learns of the murder and cover-up from clues Luther left behind. Instead of an attempt on Kate's life, multiple attempts are made to kill Graham. Walter Sullivan is also killed after he deduces Alan Richmond's guilt on his own. Tim Collin and Richmond do not die but are brought to justice along with Gloria Russell.
