One character claims how it's strange that the world is completely quiet, no birds or anything. When David's study is shown it is revealed why: every last animal on the planet was killed off or mutated by the black mutagen that was released by David, or later infected by his mutagen virus. In Alien: Covenant - Advent (2017), David confirms that the black mutagen affects all non-botanical life, explaining why plants were never affected.
