Dana Andrews's character, Admiral Broderick, is the film's American antagonist (along with his assistant Patrick O'Neal), mentioned many times throughout, mostly learned from second-hand information from John Wayne's son (and his mentor Patrick O'Neal), who is initially unlikable and works for this admiral, and almost all the other characters, from Wayne to Burgess Meredith to Kirk Douglas to Paula Prentiss, mentioning how unqualified he is, and how much a mess his Operation Skyhook is.
