For years, composer Stephen Sondheim resisted offers to mount the show on the stage, having written it explicitly for television. The first official stage production occurred in London in 2005, with Betsy Blair assuming the part of Mrs. Monday, and it subsequently played a one-night-only engagement in New York in 2010, with Candice Bergen appearing in the role.
