Although Professor X is well known for using a wheelchair, the scenes early in the movie show him walking. Obviously, from then to the beginning of the first movie in this franchise he lost that ability. But none of the movies explained why. All the audience gets to see is that while he and Magneto are forming the Xavier School, he can walk. An explanation for losing his mobility is given in X-Men - L'inizio (2011).
