Executive Producer Richard Curtis had the idea of going back and forth in time for the sequel while discussing arguments with his daughter Scarlett, who suggested it should be like The Godfather: Part II (1974). So Curtis tapped Ol Parker to help him come up with the story. When putting it together, the two stayed in a caravan for three days, pinned the names of their favorite ABBA songs to a wall, and tried to make the songs fit in with the narrative. By the time they'd finished, only five songs were left on the wall, including "Fernando", but they managed to fit it in later.
