Co-writer Dan Harmon responded to a Tumblr post written by Kelly Oxford on how her daughter Salinger was having nightmares after having seen the movie. Harmon wrote back, specifically to Salinger, telling her how the screenplay he started writing did not turn into the movie she saw. "I will tell you a secret that sounds so silly, you might not believe it, but this is true: I never finished writing Monster House before my bosses turned it into a movie. And then different writers, people I don't even know, changed the story in lots of ways, and the movie that you saw was not the story I wanted to tell you." He continued, saying how even a story that sad or scary "should always make you a little less scared after you've seen it". Of particular note, Harmon blamed Gil Kenan (calling him "a hack") and Steven Spielberg (calling him "a moron") for its scarier-than-intended tone. Harmon ended the note by saying, "...next time Monster House is on, just remember that the guy that wrote it told you it was dumb." Harmon later took to Twitter to clarify he meant no real disrespect to Spielberg, saying that he was merely frustrated that something he had a hand in writing terrified a child. "The only thing Spielberg did to Monster House was give it a chance to be seen. I don't think I ever even met the guy. There."
