Sam Hamm's ending had the Joker attempting escape via helicopter, the helicopter rouses a swarm of bats that had been sleeping in the rafters, and the bats engulf the Joker, who falls to his death. But Warren Skaaren scrapped it and re-wrote the third act. In Batman - Il ritorno (1992), a similar fate would be used for the Penguin.
