A recurring theme in the movie is that the salesmen are given "weak leads", i.e. potential customers they have all tried unsuccessfully in the past (they were either not interested in buying land, or could not afford it). Nevertheless, the salesmen are given the same leads again and again, to the point where they now even recognize the names on the cards. The company's view, as expressed by both Alec Baldwin's (Blake) and Kevin Spacey's (Williamson) characters, is that if a salesman is good enough, he can sell land to those people. However, when Levene actually does close a sale with one of the weak leads (the Nyborgs), Williamson doesn't even take him seriously. Without even checking, he says that the sale is no good, because they are very poor people who, in his own words, "...are insane. They just like to talk to salesmen." This emphasizes the impossibilities that the salesmen face: they will get fired if they don't close, but even if they do close, the sales will be no good (because the company well knows that these people don't have the money to buy real estate.)
