Zulu King Cetshwayo was a half-nephew of the famous Zulu king Shaka and son of King Mpande. While Mpande was still alive, a fight for succession occurred. Cetshwayo defeated his younger brother Mbuyazi, who was the favorite son of King Mpande. After defeating and killing Mbuyazi, he killed all of those loyal to him, including several of his other brothers. He also executed his own favorite wife and their two sons.Ironically, while this savagery was shocking to the British, such things had also taken place in the history of the succession of the English throne, albeit in somewhat more formal and orderly methods. The effect was to solidify Cetshwayo's power and to severely limit the possibility of any challenges to his throne. When Cetshwayo's father died, his death was concealed until such a time that everything was in place for a peaceful succession of power.
