Dunbar arrives at the Fort Sedgewick outpost only to find it abandoned and in a chaotic state of disrepair. While the film never reveals the fate of the garrison that had been stationed there, there was in fact a deleted scene filmed at Sedgewick prior to the Dunbar/Timmons arrival. The scene explains that most of the original garrison had deserted, their horses had been stolen, the post had been regularly harassed by marauding Indians, and no supply wagons or other support from Fort Hays had arrived. Deciding that the situation was desperate and unsustainable, the post's commanding officer Lt. Cargill (Michael Horton) assembles the remainder of his demoralized men and tells them "Get your things. We're leaving this place. The Army can go to hell." The soldiers depart for Fort Hays right before Dunbar and Timmons arrive at Sedgewick. Kevin Costner chose not to include this scene in the film's theatrical release, however it is included in the extended version.
