A third film was planned for a 2014 or 2015 release. However, due to this movie's "underwhelming" box-office performance (it earned over $348 million worldwide), and the death of Jonathan Winters, the idea of another sequel was scrapped in favor of developing I Puffi: Viaggio nella foresta segreta (2017), a completely animated reboot, which somewhat uses the plot that "The Smurfs 3" would've had. Ironically, it did only half of the worldwide business that this movie did.
