The moon's orbit being altered and chunks of the moon falling to Earth is the same plot line as the beginning of Flash Gordon (1980). Ming the Merciless alters the moon's orbit, which is discovered by Hans Zarkov and he ends up firing himself and Flash and Dale Arden into space to find the source of the power affecting the moon.
