None of the teen boys cast to act in the Sing Street band had any prior acting experience. Director John Carney described the casting process thus: with 14 year old lead actor Ferdia Walsh-Peelo, who played Conor the lead singer in the band, he at least had to have some guitar and singing experience and was subject to multiple casting calls before being chosen but 18 year old Mark McKenna was cast on the spot as the droll lead guitarist Eamon after a humourous attempt at denying he even wanted the part and 14 year old Ben Carolan, who plays the feisty Band Manager and Cameraman Darren, was also cast on the spot due to his flaming red hair and cheeky working class Dublin wisecracking.
