The gremlins have a monkey like body structure but are repeatedly referred to as resembling rodents. Given the national origin of the film and the company involved in the CGI (Weta Digital), it might be more than a coincidence that the gremlins share quite a bit of their looks with the Rat monkey featured in New Zealander and "Weta" founder Peter Jackson's Splatters - Gli schizzacervelli (1992).
