With the final episodes of the fourth season, Valerie Harper ceased to be a regular on the series, having begun production on her spin-off show, Rhoda (1974). The publicity generated by the new series was so widespread that it was not deemed necessary to explain the absence of Rhoda in the plot line of The Mary Tyler Moore Show (1970).
