The big problem faced with the fire scene was how to keep the flames going for more than 40 minutes in order to get the required shots. This was solved by devising a double network of pipes to run behind the the false fronts, one to carry a mixture of kerosene and coal tar the other one water. Elaborate rehearsals of camera movements were carried out over 10 days to ensure everything went right. Soon after8pm on 10th December 1938 the first flames were started and with the pipe controls the fires lasted 1 1/2 hours. Stuntman Yakima Canutt doubled for Clark Gable leading the wagon through the flames with Dorothy Fargo standing in as Scarlett. As the fires were started Selznick's brother Myron arrived with some guests one of which was Vivien Leigh.
