Despite Joe Gardner being the first African American main protagonist in a Pixar film, multiple territories chose a Caucasian voice actor for the part. In the Danish dubbed edition, the character is voiced by Nikolaj Lie Kaas, a white male. In response to criticism of his casting, he said it "is completely irrelevant" who voices the part.
