In the beginning sequence in the movie as Langdon is having dreams of the inferno, there is a character that walks by him in his dream/night terror that is wearing a "Plague Mask" that physicians wore during the "Black Death" and other plagues over the last 600- 700 years ago up until the 20th century as well. They are a strange contraption that has a bird like face covering the mask. The doctor would place herbs in the beaker of the mask in an attempt to ward off the miasma, or bad air, which spread the plague.
