Robert Duvall took a leave of absence from an Off-Broadway stage production of Arthur Miller's "A View From the Bridge" to make this film. He was replaced during shooting by Richard Castellano, who would later play Clemenza in "The Godfather," in which Duvall played Tom Hagen, and which starred Marlon Brando, who also appears in this film.
