The film has several themes and key plot elements in common with Marie Corelli's novel "Thelma" (1887), in which a simple Norwegian maiden marries a young distinguished Englishman and moves from the rural home of her traditional father to a mundane life among the nobility and aristocracy of London, England. The novel has been adapted into several films, such as the short film Thelma (1910). Marie Corelli (1855-1924) was an English writer of science-fiction novels with recurring themes of fervent religiosity and sexual sublimation. In her personal life, she lived together with a female companion, Bertha van der Vyver, to whom Corelli dedicated her novel "Thelma".
