Smith starred in Independence Day (1996) with Bill Pullman & Jeff Goldblum directed & co-written by Roland Emmerich. Bruckheimer and Scott produced & directed Top Gun (1986) starring Tom Cruise, Kelly McGillis & Val Kilmer. Pullman and Goldblum returned to Independence Day - Rigenerazione (2016) without Smith, while Pullman's son, Lewis Pullman joined Top Gun: Maverick (2022) with Cruise and Kilmer returning. Cruise was in talks of starring in this movie before Smith came aboard.
