Tim Burton considered Brad Dourif to play Jack Napier and the Joker but the production team wanted someone more mature-looking and chosen Jack Nicholson, with whom Dourif starred in Qualcuno volò sul nido del cuculo (1975). Brad Dourif was later wanted by Burton to play The Scarecrow in the third installment, Batman Forever (1995). However, Burton was replaced by Joel Schumacher as director, as he didn't want to change the dark tones of the franchise.
