One of the producers of the show, Douglas Schwartz's uncle Sherwood Schwartz, who created classic hit shows like L'isola di Gilligan (1964) and La famiglia Brady (1969) told Douglas that Baywatch was his Gilligan's Island and encouraged him to fight to get the show on the air.
