Preserving the environment posed challenges throughout filming and the action was often captured on the first take without rehearsals. Director Rolf de Heer said: "We needed to have the terrain undisturbed, so we worked out paths for the horses to get to an end point without treading on anything in between. And then we would shoot what would otherwise be a block-through at the end of which the ground had been disturbed and couldn't be shot again."
