In the original Suspiria (1977), the witches' coven are revealed to be practicing the Black Mass, which is a Satanic version of the standard Christian Mass. In the remake, the witches, while certainly involved with black and dark magic, have been suggested to be possibly a type of pagan who, like Patricia said in her diary, are a religion that has pre-dated the birth of Christ for millennia, maybe with roots in Slavic and Nordic religions. However, their gruesome ritual near the end of the film had all the signs of Satanic worship: people without clothes, human sacrifice, and frenetic female dancing that bore a striking resemblance to the Satanic coven in the film "The Witch."
