The technique used to give T-1000 the ability to transform is called morphing. Although it had been used previously in movies as Willow (1988), it turned so huge popular in the 90s after James Cameron's movie, being used repeatedly in several movies and music videos, not the least of which is Michael Jackson: Black or White (1991). Michael Jackson's birthday happens to be August 29; Judgement Day.
