Concerned that his first leading film role would derail his career, Newman tried to take as many acting jobs as he could before the film was released. Luckily, he was cast by veteran actor/director Robert Montgomery as the lead in the play "The Desperate Hours", when the original lead, Cliff Robertson, became unavailable. This paid off, as Newman was then offered more roles in television.
