Michael Powell initially ruled that the actresses playing the nuns would not wear any lipstick on camera. However, after a couple days' filming, they noticed that the Technicolor film made it look as though they were. The solution was to have the actresses wear lipstick in flesh-colored tones, which, ironically, made their lips look more natural.
