A few members of Dolittle's inner circle from the book are missing from this film: Gub-Gub the pig, Cheapside the sparrow, Too-Too the owl, and Matthew Mugg the cat food salesman. The Doctor's unpleasant and irritable sister Sarah, who left the household due to being crowded by the animals, is never mentioned. Most conspicuously absent is the Pushmi-Pullyu, an absurd two-headed animal which is always both coming and going. It was drawn as a gazelle-like creature in the book, and portrayed as a llama in Il favoloso dottor Dolittle (1967).
