As previously mentioned, director Steven Spielberg made a decision at the time to not all the release this film onto home video, until he finally relented in 1988. However the film was theatrically re-released at least once in that time. The film received its worldwide network television debut in the UK on Christmas day 1990 (on BBC1), just over 8 years after its original theatrical release there. It actually debuted on U.S. television the same day but was shown first in the UK because of the time difference.Interestingly the BBC wanted to make three minor edits to the film for daytime broadcast and personally asked Spielberg's permission to do so. Not only did Spielberg give his approval but he also tweaked the same three scenes in his 2002 'Special Edition' version' based on the BBC's suggestion of 12 years previously.
