Jon Favreau was the first director to be attached to this movie. While casting this movie, he rejected Erich Bergen's audition for the role of Bob Gaudio, saying he "wasn't right for the role." Bergen had spent the three previous years playing the role of Gaudio on-stage. When Clint Eastwood was brought on to direct, he hired Bergen for the role with one audition.
