Ewan McGregor was cast as Renton on the strength of his performance in Danny Boyle's previous film, Piccoli omicidi tra amici (1994). Boyle wanted an actor with the charisma of Michael Caine in Alfie (1966) and Malcolm McDowell in Arancia meccanica (1971).
