James Cameron, creator of the Terminator film series, stated that he loved this film and how respectful it was to Terminator (1984) and Terminator 2 - Il giorno del giudizio (1991), calling it the real third Terminator film. He praised the new Emilia Clarke incarnation of Sarah Connor and liked the twist about John Connor being the film's main antagonist. But in an interview two years later where he announced his involvement in a proposed new trilogy of Terminator films, Cameron admitted that the Terminator movies made after T2 did not work for him for various reasons, and he tried not to be too negative about them because of his friendship with Arnold Schwarzenegger.
