Terminator Salvation (2009) was originally planned as the first installment of a new trilogy of Terminator Salvation films, and the film's ending therefore left open for a sequel. However, due to the bankruptcy of The Halcyon Company and Christian Bale not returning, the rights to the franchise ended up with Skydance Productions who decided to produce the reboot Terminator Genisys (2015) instead. Director McG later revealed that Salvation's unproduced sequel would have re-introduced the time-travel and chase-movie elements, with John Connor himself sent back to a pre-Judgment Day era, and Skynet sending non-infiltrator Terminators; he also intended to retcon Sarah Connor's death and have Linda Hamilton return, as well as Robert Patrick to play a scientist researching cell replication, being ultimately responsible for the creation of the T-1000.
