Methuselah is a by-word for longevity due to his being the longest lived of the patriarchs in the Bible, living to nine hundred sixty-nine years. In Genesis Chapter 5 it states that Methuselah lived one hundred eighty-seven years and begat Lamech, and that Lamech lived one hundred eighty-two years and begat Noah. In the following chapter it says the flood came on the Earth in Noah's six hundredth year. So the flood was 187 + 182 + 600 years after Methuselah's birth, which is 969 years. This means that Methuselah did indeed die in the year of the flood, as this movie shows.
