The original ending involved Sylvia Broome's having made up the assassination plot, in order to blackmail a political official into ceasing the genocide in Africa. Although Sydney Pollack agreed to direct based on that draft, it was one of the first things he had changed. This in turn changed much of the structure of the script, so Scott Frank and Steven Zaillian were brought in to doctor it.
