The ambiguous ending seems to suggest that Aoyama (Ryo Ishibashi) either has paranoid visions of how Asami (Eihi Shiina) will get back at him, or is having flashbacks during his torment to earlier moments, which he finally remembers correctly. Director Takashi Miike has denied that the final torture scenes are paranoid nightmares dreamed up by Aoyama.
