Brandon Cronenberg said he originally wrote the scene in which Vos has sex with the intention of showing Vos as having a penis, but he subsequently edited the script, knowing some actors would not feel comfortable with it. Upon casting Andrea Riseborough, the two had a conversation during which Riseborough suggested the idea of Vos having male genitalia, which delighted Cronenberg and made him feel like she was reading his mind. The scene was rewritten back to its original form and what is seen on film is what Cronenberg initially envisioned.
