The film represented the fourth feature film of screenwriter Deborah Parsons. The story-line for this movie actually evolved over many years. Director John Tatoulis initially approached her with the concept in 1987. Although it seemed like a good idea, the pressure of other commitments forced her to put the script aside for some time. According to Parsons: "In an ideal world it's best to put a script aside for a year and then pick it up again. Imagine how good this one must be... after it's been sitting for almost 8 years!".
