The plot shares several similarities with the H.P. Lovecraft's 1927 short-story The Colour Out of Space, also adapted into a film in the same year: both movies share a similar color palette and involve a meteor that crashes on planet Earth, an alien entity that changes plant and animal life and alters the landscape around it, and a group of people that they affected by the meteor while try to study the altered landscape around the crash landing.
