The fate of Benvolio is not known in the William Shakespeare play, as he disappears after Mercutio's death. According to one of Lord Montague's lines in the quarto ("and young Benvolio is slain"), he somehow dies offstage before the final scene. This film depicts him in the ending, publicly mourning the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. This is similar to Lady Montague, who is said to have died offstage in the final scene, but the film spares her. The Nurse is shown in this final scene too when she wasn't in the play (although in the original Italian legend, she was banished as punishment for helping Juliet).
