Due to the timing and scope of how the film was first released and later moved into more theaters, AMERICAN SNIPER holds a unique record at the box office: it has easily earned the lowest amount of money during a calendar year in which it was the #1 film for that year. This is due to Warner Bros. only opening the film in a handful of theaters during the last week of 2014 so that it would be eligible for Academy Award consideration. It earned just over $2 million before 2015 began, and $348 million during its 2015 run in theaters.
