At the time of the theatrical debut of Suicide Squad (2016), Jared Leto became the third actor in the modern era to portray the Joker in a major live-action cinema movie to have won an Oscar for acting. Leto had recently won a Best Actor in a Supporting Role Academy Award for Dallas Buyers Club (2013). Jack Nicholson, who portrayed the Joker in this movie, has won three Oscars, one each for Voglia di tenerezza (1983) (Actor in a Supporting Role), Qualcosa è cambiato (1997) (Lead Actor), and Qualcuno volò sul nido del cuculo (1975) (Lead Actor). Heath Ledger won a posthumous Academy Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for portraying the Joker in Il cavaliere oscuro (2008). Joaquin Phoenix then went on to win the Best Actor Academy Award for his role in Joker (2020).
