On December 30, 2022, Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting filed a lawsuit in Santa Monica Superior Court, accusing Paramount of sexually exploiting them (stating Franco Zeffirelli assured them nude scenes would not be required, then encouraged them to do so regardless) and distributing nude images of adolescent children. The complaint says that Hussey and Whiting have suffered mental anguish and emotional distress in the 55 years since the film's release, and that the movie has cost them loss of paid work. They are seeking damages "believed to be in excess of $500 million."
