P.J. O'Rourke blames this movie for the decline and fall of the "National Lampoon" magazine. After the immense success of the movie at the box office, various Hollywood studios and producers began to offer jobs to the best Lampoon writers. When they realized they could make much, much more money writing movie scripts than writing for the Lampoon, they left for Hollywood. O'Rourke noted that many of the projects these writers worked on never amounted to much, which hurt the writers' careers as much as the magazine.
