Composer Stanley Myers originally wrote "Cavatina" for the film La ragazza con il bastone (1970) (which became the theme music for this movie) as a much shorter piece for the piano. Classical guitarist John Williams persuaded him to to expand it and re-write it for the guitar. Williams' recording of the piece was later used for the film. Cleo Laine has also recorded a vocal version, "He Was Beautiful," accompanied by Williams.
