Al Pacino and James Caan were nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for their performances in Il padrino (1972). Pacino received another nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in this film, competing with his Il padrino - Parte III (1990) castmate Andy Garcia, who played Caan's son. They ended up losing to Joe Pesci for another gangster picture, Quei bravi ragazzi (1990).
