Early drafts from Damian Shannon and Mark Swift had Tommy Jarvis appearing as a cameo where he was one of the construction workers trying to rebuild Crystal Lake to something else. Other drafts had him instead be a name drop who instead signed a petition to rebuild Crystal Lake. Discussions at the time said that Jason Bateman was to play him, but according to Shannon and Swift, the studio disliked the idea because they felt "casual audience wouldn't understand the reference." or if anyone would even know who Tommy Jarvis was. They wanted the movie to be as casual-friendly as possible and not have too many references to prior movies.
